Apple has published a patent for iPhone cases and docking stations that support near-field wireless communication systems. According to Apple Patently, this accessory will significantly change how the iPhone works and user interface (UI).

For example, in a sports protective case, the iPhone can automatically change its GUI to a sports one. Another example shows that when an iPhone is docked with speakers, its user interface can change with a set of audio playback controls.

Basically, when an iPhone enters one of these cases or docks, it changes its user interface to dedicate itself to the accessory. This new GUI will be even simpler than the standard iPhone interface.

The patent also includes drawings illustrating an iPhone in a car dock. (Perhaps in an Apple car?) Last week, Apple released a patent that would make the car use an iPhone for self-driving. According to the patent, when you insert an iPhone, CarPlay and Maps replace its standard user interface.

To be honest, I like the idea of this patent. It’s hard to imagine what it would look like live. However, it seems really cool and looks like something I would like to test. There are so many targets that Apple can create for different user interfaces – it would be interesting to see what it does. What do you think of an iPhone case or stand that customizes the user experience? Would you use one?
