IT House news on May 13, according to the release of openEuler, recently, Euler’s open source operating system has successfully run on VisionFive, the Fang·Xingguang RISC-V single-board computer of Saifang Technology.

The adaptation of openEuler and VisionFive was undertaken and completed by RISC-V SIG developer Samuel Yuan. At present, the basic software of openEuler on VisionFive has been successfully adapted. The overall operation process is relatively smooth, and the peripherals work normally.

VisionFive was launched by Saifang Technology, a leader in the RISC-V software and hardware ecosystem. It is the world’s first Linux-based cost-effective RISC-V single-board computer. VisionFive provides open source hardware guarantee for the transplantation of open source software in RISC-V, and drives the realization of more top-level innovative applications of RISC-V.

According to reports, when openEuler runs on VisionFive, the startup speed of the xfce graphical interface is good, and related GUI applications such as file system, terminal emulator and input method also run smoothly. However, the operating level of openEuler’s graphics software on VisionFive needs to be improved.

There is still a lot of room for improvement in openEuler running on RISC-V open source hardware:

  • At present, the GUI is only initially adapted to xfce4, and there are still many GUI applications that need to be adapted.

  • VisionFive does not have a GPU, and the graphical interface relies on LLVMpipe for rendering, and the CPU load is large. Development board performance needs to be optimized to improve rendering speed.

  • The RISC-V SIG also needs to enhance support for SELinux.

In order to help interested partners have the ability to proficiently deploy Euler open source operating system software on the VisionFive hardware platform, the official organizes the “Play with openEuler on VisionFive” series of courses to share with you:

The course has now completed the operation manual on the installation of Euler open source operating system in VisionFive, and it is expected to supplement the operation manual of GUI application verification, testing and optimization in the future.

With the successful adaptation of Euler’s open source operating system to VisionFive, the RISC-V Lab’s infrastructure will continue to expand and improve, deploying more VisionFive development boards.

For the planning of GUI application implementation in usage scenarios, RISC-V SIG will carry out the adaptation of important GUI applications such as FireFox browser, Chromium browser, LibreOffice and other important GUI applications on development boards such as VisionFive.

As an open source operating system that supports diverse computing power, OpenEuler supports six major processor architectures: x86, Arm, RISC-V, LoongArch, SW64, and Power.

According to OpenEuler official data, up to now, the cumulative installed capacity of openEuler has reached more than 1.3 million units, and the installed capacity is expected to reach 2 million units in 2022. At the same time, in 2021, the openEuler series products will rank first in new market shares in the government market, operators, finance and other industries.
