IT House May 12 news, Mercury Research released its CPU market share report for the first quarter of 2022. The results show that all segments of the x86 processor market experienced a decline in the quarter, with desktop computers suffering losses. The largest, a full 30% decline, is the largest single-quarter decline in history.

It’s worth mentioning that AMD had a good quarter, once again hitting a new high of 27.7% of the x86 market share — up from the previous record of 25.6%. This is an increase of 7 percentage points from last year, IT House understands.

Analysts pointed out that both Intel and AMD suffered losses, but AMD’s losses did not come as quickly as Intel, thus contributing to the increase in market share during the quarter.

In addition, AMD continued to grow in the mobile platform/notebook segment, reaching a new high with a 22.5% market share, and in the server market for 12 consecutive quarters, with a market share now at 11.6%.

On the Intel side, Intel actually increased its share by a percentage point year-over-year this quarter, thanks to the Alder Lake processor family.

In the mobile market, however, both Intel and AMD saw their sales decline. Likewise, AMD was less affected, so the drop was smaller, leading to a share gain (4.4%).

Analyst McCarron said: “Despite the economic downturn, the market is setting multiple records, including server processor revenue, IoT/semi-custom chip shipments and revenue all at record highs, and combo-end (desktop and notebook) Computer) average CPU prices also hit a record high.”

“Low-end entry-level CPU shipments declined, but new mobile processors saw strong growth (Intel Alder Lake and AMD Rembrandt), resulting in more expensive mobile CPUs, which also helped set new customer records (desktop and notebook) The combined average price of computers is $138), an increase of more than 10% month-on-month and a year-on-year increase of more than 30%.”

McCarron described Arm’s presence in the desktop PC market, which is currently dominated by Apple. “We estimate Arm PC client market share (which includes Chromebooks and Macs based on X86 desktop and mobile CPUs) at 11.3%, up from 10.3% in the previous quarter and nearly double the 5.9% in the year-ago quarter. While Apple’s Mac business declined in the first quarter, the decline was small compared to the X86 PC market.”
