Update from May 11, 2022 (7 a.m.): Yesterday’s mini drop at Otto* once again offered the complete spectrum – from surprising cancellations (even hours after order confirmation) to error messages and accidental multiple orders. In some cases, the delivery date is June – according to the item description, the console should be with the customer in two to three working days.

Update from May 10, 2022 (7 p.m.): Today’s Tuesday is games history in a way: Because the best-selling PlayStation game for years – the FIFAseries by Electronic Arts – will no longer be called as of the coming season FIFA. No joke: FIFA 23 (coming out in the fall) is the last FIFA. From next year, the football game will be known as EA Sports FC, which was already indicated six months ago.

Until finally FIFA 21 Sony Interactive has regularly released PS4 bundles consisting of console plus game. In the case of the PlayStation 5, there has only been one official PS5 bundle so far, namely in mid-2021 Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The ongoing supply bottlenecks are likely to bundles Horizon: Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 have prevented.

Update from May 10, 2022 (11 a.m.): Addendum to the (small) Otto* This morning’s drop: Readers have informed us that next to the Spider Manpackage also including a PS5 bundle Gran Turismo 7 and Horizon: Forbidden West sold for €659.

This continues a cross-dealer trend: The console is hardly ever sold on its own, but always in combination with games and/or accessories.

Update from May 10, 2022 (9:50 am): What our drop statistics indicated is now also confirmed by the hard figures from Sony Interactive: In the first quarter of this year (January to March) the group shipped only half as many PS5 consoles as in the Christmas quarter of 2021, namely 2 million devices.

The total rises to 19.3 million consoles.

Message from May 9, 2022 (9 a.m.): It will be exciting tomorrow, Tuesday: That is when the Sony Group will announce the business and sales figures for the past season (April 2021 to March 2022) – including an outlook for the current year. It can be assumed that the chip crisis and the container ship traffic jams in front of the Asian ports will continue to have a massive impact on delivery volumes.

Sony had already announced a production cut for the first quarter of this year, which can be traced almost 1:1 in our drop statistics. Because between January and March it was incredibly difficult to even get hold of a PlayStation 5 – only in April did the quantities increase again measurably in the last third of the month.

If you don’t own a PlayStation 5 yet, you still need a lot of luck and patience to get hold of the game console. Exhibit 1: In May, which is already a few days old, there was one Amazon* so far only one dealer who has sold larger quantities.

We assume that we will experience rarer drops with fewer goods in May – also because, among other things, the lockdown-related effects on logistics in Asia were not baked into the most recent drops. Because the console, which was handed over or delivered at the end of April, rolled off the assembly line in February or March. Everything that is now sold in May, on the other hand, comes from the April batches.

When Sony’s balance sheet is presented tomorrow, there will certainly be very specific information on this topic, as to how many consoles can be expected in the second quarter (April to June) and by the end of the year.

Among our readers’ favorite PS5 retailers is Amazon – for reasons. Because there have been almost no cancellations in the past year and a half – technical problems when accessing the website and app do occur during a drop, but they are very limited.

If you are speculating on an Amazon PS5, there are two important tips. First: always and always log in with your Prime account (Free Trial*) – nothing works without Prime. Second: Make sure you use the opportunity to put the console on the watch and wish list:

The number of originally packaged PS5 consoles is still quite high ebay*: The level is almost 800 pieces. According to our statistics, the tariffs have fallen slightly in the last few days, which is due to the greater ‘competition’. The “bare console” was sometimes sold for less than €700, but the total price including the game package was more like €750. The Digital Edition ranges between €550 and €600, which is still a substantial premium compared to the RRP – which is also due to the fact that the model was not available at all for a long time. Less than 20 devices are currently on display on Ebay.
