The controversy surrounding splash pool streamers hasn’t died down since permissive content creators got their own category on Twitch called Pools, Hot Tubs and Beaches. Hot tub streamers “SpookyUnagi” and “SpoopyKitt” have already been banned multiple times this May.
They accuse the Amazon-powered platform of suspending accounts for “unjustified” reasons. The procedure at Twitch is typical: Streamers are banned, but there is often no justification for the process, even if both parties go to court. Both “SpookyUnagi” and “SpoopyKitt” affirm in their statements that they have done nothing differently in their streams than before. It looks like Twitch is trying to get rid of its paddling pool streamers.
Two bans in one week
After her second ban in a week, Unagi explained that she was completely in the dark and had no idea what she was doing in violation of the site’s rules. “Please tell me what I’m doing wrong,” she said, tagging Twitch on Twitter. “I do NOTHING differently than a year ago”.
“If Twitch wants to end bikini streaming, then so be it. It’s their business and their prerogative,” she added. “But the category still exists. Clearer guidance needs to be released. Twitch allows content creators to build a career and a life by producing content that they’ve allowed for a year. These are all freelancers who essentially ‘Work for’ Twitch, they buy houses, cars, assets, use the income to invest,” she said in another thread. “And now there are threats to take it all away with unjustified bans.”
New Twitch policy the reason?
Echoing her friend’s sentiment, streamer SpoopyKitt commented, “I’ve been hula-hooping in the hot tub for a year so I don’t know why it’s suddenly being considered ‘sexually suggestive’.”
To complicate things further, streamers were concerned about a blog post on Twitch that “clarified” the guidelines on sexual content but didn’t provide updates on bikini streams. As usual, streamers are groping in the dark as there will be no statement from Twitch as to why the streamers were banned. Are we seeing the end of permissive streams on Twitch here?
