German retail chain Lidl is raising the minimum wage for its employees from €12.50 ($13.40) to €14 as of June. “Our colleagues put in an above-average effort every day and it is a key concern for us that this is also rewarded in a fair and above-average way,” the chief executive of Lidl in Germany, Christian Härtnagel, said on Wednesday. The decision comes several weeks after competitor Aldi made a similar announcement. The minimum wage at Lidl and Aldi will thus be significantly higher than the statutory minimum wage, which will rise to €10.45 in July.
