FORT WAYNE, Indiana — Ethan Pearl had been searching for a job for almost a year when he walked into General Motors Co.’s on-site hiring event at the truck plant here on a rainy May afternoon. The area doesn’t have many jobs that match his graphic design background, and working in fast food “wasn’t fun,” the 26-year-old Fort Wayne resident said after filling out an application to become a temporary worker making Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks.
