Windows 11 Home requires a Microsoft account to activate the computer. Users who want to use a local account must first set up the computer with a Microsoft account before they can create a local account and select it by default when the computer starts.

Soon, this rule will also apply to Windows 11 Pro. In the latest Windows Insider build of the system, version 22616a Microsoft account is also required for those who have entered a product key for the Pro version.

Those who have an Enterprise or school license can continue to use local (or locally administered) accounts, and Microsoft seems to keep a small loophole for the time being: If you indicate in the activation settings that you use the computer at work or for school work, you can still activate without a Microsoft -account.

It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post, but it seems clear that Microsoft will eventually link all private Windows installations to one account.
