For a long time it was just a rumor, now Sony and Naughty Dog have let the proverbial cat out of the bag: The Last of Us (from 18.00€ at buy) Remake is reality – and will be released in September 2022.

A real remake

Where “The Last of Us” is written, secrecy seems to be an issue. After all, this time it was only a few hours before the originally planned presentation at the Summer Game Fest led to the premature publication of relevant information: The Last of Us is getting a remake.

What started as a rumor in April 2021 is now finally official. As Neil Druckmann pointed out in the Summer Game Fest presentation, The Last of Us Part 1 is the “definitive” version of the original The Last of Us – and thus closer to the studio’s original vision than the seminal adventure of Joel and Ellie from 2013.

In September for PS5 and PC

Using the latest technology, the original performances of Troy Baker as Joel and Ashley Johnson as Ellie have been carried over to the new version of the game. In addition, the developers would have used everything in the implementation of The Last of Us that they would have further developed with Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Part 2 – from the AI to animation systems to the level of detail in the environment and characters.

A first trailer for the remake then also shows the gigantic advances that technology has made in the last nine years – and how much the unchanged story and its characters could benefit from this fundamental revision. A release date is also revealed: The Last of Us Part 1 will be released on September 2, 2022 for PS5 and PC.

And what about multiplayer?

While the Left Behind DLC is part of The Last of Us Part 1, there was no mention of the original Factions multiplayer. And there is a reason for that: It was also announced at the Summer Game Fest that the project originally intended as an update for The Last of Us Part 2 has become independent.

Druckmann called Factions perhaps the greatest game Naughty Dog had ever made – but couldn’t come up with much more than a concept image that pointed to the San Francisco setting. And then put off until 2023 for more information. His promise: There is a story that should be told in a “unique” way.
