The macOS Ventura update is due out publicly this October. Many features of macOS Monterey only work on Apple Silicon Macs, and this year’s update also includes the same restrictions.
Thankfully, most of the features in macOS 13 will work on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs this time around.
If your Intel Mac model meets the minimum requirements of macOS Ventura, you’ll be able to access almost all of the new features. However, there are three exceptions that will only work on Apple Silicon Macs. Below we will talk about them.
Online subtitles
macOS Ventura includes an online captioning feature for all audio content, including FaceTime. The function allows you to turn the conversation into subtitles in real time. Feature available in English only on iPhone 11 and later, iPad with A12 Bionic processor and later, and all Apple Silicon Macs.
Reference Mode for Sidecar
Reference Mode for Sidecar lets you use your 12.9-inch iPad Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display as a second display for your Mac. The mode was created for professional tasks.
As an example, Apple showed the main interface of Da Vinci Resolve on the connected Studio Display screen, and color graphs on the MacBook Pro screen. The image is displayed in full screen on the M1 iPad Pro in Sidecar mode.
Emoji in dictation mode
In macOS Ventura, dictation automatically places commas, periods, and question marks in text. You can also insert emoji with your voice. However, this feature will only work on Mac models with an M1 processor or later.
Dictation is available for the following languages: Cantonese, English, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish.
As this short list shows, macOS Ventura has fewer restrictions for Intel Mac users than macOS Monterey. Recall that the version of macOS 13 has ceased to support some models of Intel Mac 2013-2016.
Apple has almost completed a two-year transition from Intel processors to custom Apple Silicon processors for Mac. It will finally be completed by the release of the new Mac Pro with an Apple Silicon processor this year. Starting in 2023, support for Intel Macs will begin to decline faster.
The macOS 13 Ventura update is currently only available as a developer beta, with a public beta due in July.
