Apple has updated the MacBook Air line by introducing a second laptop model on a proprietary processor. At the same time, iron is not its only advantage. It also surprises with its design.
We studied the characteristics and compared the new product with the previous model – MacBook Air (2020) M1. Here’s what happened.
Design
The new MacBook Air has received a radically updated body. First of all, it is square in shape, the predecessor has a wedge-shaped one. The dimensions of the novelty have slightly increased in height – 30.41 x 21.5 cm for the model with M2 versus 30.41 x 21.24 cm for the device with M1.
The next generation of Apple laptops live up to the “airy” characterization. The new device is 50 grams lighter than the old one and weighs 1,290 kg.
There are more body colors – the new model has four of them: silver, gray, gold and black. The model with M1 has three of them: gold, silver and space gray.
Screen
The main innovation is a cutout in the screen for a webcam. The latest models of MacBook Pro and iPhone since 2017 are equipped with the same. This made it possible to integrate a larger screen, while maintaining the same dimensions.
The MacBook Air M2 has a larger, crisper, and brighter screen. It features a 13.6-inch display with a resolution of 2560 x 1664 and a brightness of 500 nits. The Air M1 has the following specs: 13.3-inch screen size, 2560 x 1600 resolution, 400 nits brightness.
The rest of the characteristics of laptops are exactly the same. Backlight type – LED Retina, P3 color gamut, True Tone technology supported.
Keyboard, ports, webcam
Apple uses the Magic Keyboard, it abandoned the butterfly mechanism in all laptop models, it was previously used in models from 2016 to 2019. Air M1 is also equipped with Magic Keyboard, so there are no differences.
Both laptops on the keyboards have two features – a globe icon is placed on the Fn key in the lower left corner, so now it is responsible for switching languages and calling emoji; in addition, instead of the Launchpad call key (F4), there is now a Spotlight search launch button, and the keyboard brightness keys (F5 and F6) have been replaced with buttons for launching dictation and turning on / off the Do Not Disturb mode.
MagSafe charging has been added to the new laptop. The cable will be sold separately. In other connectors, it is similar to its predecessor – two USB-C and one 3.5 mm.
The MacBook Air M2 features a new 1080p FaceTime HD webcam. She also received an enlarged sensor and larger pixels. The MacBook Air M1 has an ancient 720p webcam.
Iron
MacBook Air (2022) runs on the new M2 processor. It offers an 18% increase in performance over the M1 and a GPU with nine or 10 cores, depending on the configuration – nine in the minimum and 10 in all others.
The M2 also features Apple’s next generation GPU with 10 cores – two more than the M1. Combined with more cache and higher bandwidth, the 10-core GPU delivers up to 25% more graphics performance than the M1 at the same power level and up to 35% at maximum power.
MacBook Air (2022) provides up to 18 hours of video playback. Its predecessor has a similar indicator of autonomy. The novelty is equipped with fast charging, which replenishes up to 50% of the battery capacity in 30 minutes. Only for this you need to buy a more powerful power supply.
Price
The MacBook Air 2022 will start at $1,199 in the minimum configuration. Air 2020 cost from $999, the laptop will rise in price by $200 in the US.
