Apple has added virtual RAM to iPadOS 16. This was written in MacRumors.

The ability to use part of the internal drive as RAM has long appeared in Android smartphones. After numerous tests and comparisons, most users and tech bloggers agreed that virtual RAM does not provide almost any noticeable advantage in working with the device. That is, a virtual RAM is not at all the same as a regular one.

It now appears that Apple has decided to take advantage of the rival camp and implemented the same capability in iPadOS 16. The company says that virtual RAM will only be available on iPads with a Silicon M1 chip, and exclusively for the new Stage Manager feature. It seems that this window manager is really very demanding on resources – which is why Apple has deprived it of most iPad models.

It is not yet known how useful the virtual RAM will be in practice in iPadOS 16. However, it is worth recalling that in devices with Silicon M1 all the memory is in a direct, very close connection with the processor, which means that in these devices there can be much sense from the “virtual” more than Android smartphones.
