The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) now announces that they will make it more difficult for car manufacturers to pass tests of auto brake systems. They started testing this in 2013 but a lot has happened with the technology since then and therefore the tests need to be updated. Then they only tested whether the systems worked at 19 and 40 km / h. As a result, 85 percent of all cars of the 2022 model year have been rated Superior in this category, and that is a bit misleading. From next year, they will therefore start testing the systems at 56 and 72 km / h instead. The tests will also be broadened to see how well they can detect motorcycles and large trucks.

Auto brake technology does not work so well in low light

And at high speeds

IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) has conducted a new study where they have looked more closely at modern cars’ automatic braking systems that should intervene even if the driver does not pay attention to a pedestrian or the like. As before, this showed that the systems do not work so well when there is bad light and if the car is driving fast. In the tests, cars equipped with auto brakes were as bad as cars that were not. IIHS will now put together a system for testing car auto brakes when it is dark and develop a rating system for this. The first figures on this will be published later this year.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests headlights

Only one car received good marks

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has for the first time conducted a test of different car models’ headlights to see how they perform when darkness falls. A total of 31 cars were tested, but only one received good marks and it was the Toyota Prius V with LED headlights and automatic dimming. The results of all cars can be found at the link below.

Small SUVs are struggling in a new crash test

One in 20 was rated “good”

The American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has started with a tougher side impact test because these bumps often occur in car accidents. It turns out, however, that the new test is a struggle for small SUVs. Only one out of 20 tested received the rating “good” and that was the Mazda CX-5. Before starting this tougher test, all these cars were rated “good”. Now it became instead “acceptable” for Audi Q3, Buick Encore, Chevrolet Trax, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Venza and Volvo XC40 and “margin” for Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade, Kia Sportage and Lincoln Corsair. Honda HR-V and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross landed on “poor”. In the clip above, the IIHS tells you how to perform the test.
