Microsoft is rumored to want to kill the traditional hard drive. Wants Windows to roll on SSDs from next year.

The analysis company TrendMicro states that several PC manufacturers have received instructions from Microsoft that their future computers must use SSDs as the primary storage medium for Windows 11.

At present, manufacturers can choose whether they want their computers to boot Windows from an HDD, what is traditionally called a hard drive, or an SSD, what is sometimes called a flash memory. According to the information, Microsoft wants the PC manufacturers to start phasing out HDD as the primary storage medium for Windows as early as next year.

Whether Microsoft will start forcing PC manufacturers to run SSDs as the primary storage medium for Windows or whether it’s just recommendations is unclear. There are currently no requirements in the Windows 11 requirements specifications that the computers must be equipped with an SSD.

However, running operating systems on SSDs instead of HDDs is usually preferable. This is because SSDs are usually much faster than HDDs. Microsoft has so far not commented on the rumor that it will require SSDs for Windows 11 computers from next year.
