WWDC 2022 will take place in a month. The event will mark the launch of macOS 13, the next major release of Apple’s software platform for the Mac, as well as the first new operating system since the full transition from Intel to its own silicon. Below, we break down all the latest rumors and expectations for macOS 13 this year, including new features, release information, and more.

When will macOS 13 be announced?

As precedent shows, macOS 13 will be announced at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference. This year, WWDC will take place as a virtual event from June 6-10. Apple will host a keynote on June 6 to kick off the event, and it’s during this keynote that we expect to get our first look at macOS 13, along with iOS 16, iPadOS 16, watchOS 9, and tvOS 16.

Following the announcement, Apple will test the operating system for several months until it is released to all users in the fall, as the company has been doing in recent years. Unlike iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS, Apple usually takes a little longer to release macOS updates to all users.

Expect all this new software to be released in September, with macOS 13 likely to be available by October or November.

What will macOS 13 be called?

At the moment, inside macOS 13 it’s called Rome, but to us outsiders, that doesn’t mean much. In recent years, Apple has referred to its Mac operating systems as California parks. In December, Parker Ortolani wrote about why the company is likely to call macOS 13 Mammoth:

We previously reported in June [2021] that Apple owns the Mammoth trademark. In the same report, we suggested that Apple planned to use the name “Monterey” for this year’s version of the Mac operating system, and that turned out to be true. So since Mammoth is apparently the last remaining trademark in California, it’s highly likely that it claims macOS 13.

Note. This is only a conceptual image, not real information.

As Apple has completed a two-year transition from Intel to its own chips, it is likely that more Intel Macs will lose support for macOS 13.

Chances are, 2013, 2014, and 2015 Macs could be ripped off. For now, here are the Macs that currently support macOS 12 Monterey:

MacBook 2015 and up MacBook Air early 2015 and up MacBook Air Early 2015 and up MacBook Pro Late 2014 and up Mac mini Late 2015 and up iMac 2017 and up iMac Pro Late 2013 and up Mac Pro 2022 Mac Studio

New Features

macOS 13 is likely to focus more than ever on the Apple Silicon Mac. With deeper integration between hardware and software, macOS 13 saw updated notifications, widgets anywhere on the home screen, and improvements to universal control.

Sight

Although rumors about macOS 13 are almost non-existent, Apple is certainly preparing a big announcement of this operating system. After years of neglect, the company has never been on such good terms with its Mac line.

But I hope that Apple will not only release new features, but will be able to launch them as soon as possible, since there were many delayed features in macOS 12 Monterey. For example, Universal Control was launched a few weeks ago but is currently still in beta.

What are you hoping to see in the next version of macOS? What is at the top of your wish list? Let us know in the comments!
