The iOS 16 update supports iPhone 8, iPhone X, and newer models. However, not all features will be available for older iPhones. This article has collected all the features that will only work on iPhone XR, iPhone XS or newer.

iOS 16 features only available for new iPhones

iOS 16 features available for iPhone 11 and later

Live subtitles: Transcriptions are generated automatically in real time for deaf or hard of hearing users so they can more easily follow conversations, audio and video. Feature requires iPhone 11, iPad with A12 Bionic chip, or Mac with Apple processor. The feature is only available in English (Canada, USA).

iOS 16 features only available for iPhone 13

iPhone 13 models also have iOS 16 exclusive features. Here they are:

Foreground blur in portrait photos: Portrait mode lets you blur objects in the foreground of your photo for a more realistic depth of field effect.

Improved recording quality in Film Effect mode: When recording video in Movie Effect mode on iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, the depth of field effect is more accurate around the edges of hair and glasses.

These are all exclusive features for new iPhone models. As you can see, many of them work on the iPhone XR and iPhone XS, and only a few camera-related features work exclusively for iPhone 13 users.

iOS 16 will release later this fall, with public beta testing starting next month.
