A mobile version of the Thunderbird email and messaging client is a long-standing and recurring request from a segment of its computer users. It is indeed lacking on both Android and iOS.

With an entirely new product in mind, this question was under consideration in 2020 when the Thunderbird project came under the ownership of MZLA Technologies Corporation, a subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation. Time has passed since then, without finally seeing anything coming on the horizon.

Earlier this week, Ryan Lee Sipes tweeted that a Thunderbird mobile app will be available soon. Responsible for product and development for Thunderbird, however, he does not give a precise timetable or details.

Not the number one priority

He points out that a mobile application with proper synchronization is his second priority, after fixing the user interface of Thunderbird. A priori, it is the Android devices that will be the first concerned, knowing that on iOS there will be the usual constraints of passing through WKWebView of the WebKit API.

On a computer, a Thunderbird version 102 is planned for later this year with a Spaces toolbar for navigating between activities in the application, a new address book, the preview of rich links with content displayed from the website, a redesign message headers, import or export accounts and data without the need for add-ons, preliminary messaging protocol support Matrix.
