If you’re a huge horror movie fan, you’re probably familiar with Cannibal Holocaust, the 1980 Italian cannibalistic horror film directed by Ruggero Deodato and written by Gianfranco Clerici. But, did you know that its director was arrested for homicide, the film being of an appalling realism?

Cannibal Holocaust is a horror film made in the form of a documentary. It tells the story of a legendary cannibalistic tribe living in South America. Nevertheless, since its release, this film has been the target of censorship by both moral and animal rights activists. Indeed, apart from the gore scenes, it also includes scenes of sexual violence but also animal cruelty. Confronted with this, Cannibal Holocaust has been banned in more than 50 countries, such as Australia, the United States, Norway, Finland, Iceland and New Zealand. In 2006, Entertainment Weekly named it as the sixth most controversial film in history.

Only ten days after its premiere in Milan, this horror film was seized on the orders of a local magistrate and Ruggero Deodato was charged with obscenity, the film being so realistic. According to the courts, some cast members, including the actress appearing in the impalement scene, were killed for the film. During the legal proceedings, many questions also arose about why the actors did not appear in any media the following year. But these supposedly deceased actors had actually signed contracts with the production not to appear in any media, film or advertisement for a year after the film’s release in order to highlight the script that tells the story. of missing documentarians.

In order to prove his innocence, the director then allowed the interviews of the actors in question. He also told the court how he achieved the special effect of the impalement scene: a bicycle seat was attached to the end of an iron pole, on which the actress sat. Ruggero Deodato also showed the court photographs of the actress chatting with the film crew after making this scene. With this evidence in hand, the courts dropped all murder charges against the director after three years of fighting. Do you like movies like this? These films of incredible violence have also forever marked the history of cinema with great spurts of hemoglobin.
