AMD’s top model, the Ryzen 9 5950X, is currently cheaper than the new Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which has been optimized for games. Buyers can thus choose between high gaming and high multi-core performance for almost the same price.

In the last few weeks, AMD has not only expanded the existing range of Ryzen 5000 CPUs, but also launched the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, the first processor to use the new 3D V-Cache. This increases performance, especially in games, so that the new eight-core, together with the Intel Core i9-12900KS, is currently the fastest gaming CPU.

Twisted price structure

However, this high gaming performance costs AMD a lot, and the PCGH price comparison currently shows a surprising picture: AMD’s actual top model, the Ryzen 9 5950X, is currently cheaper than the new Ryzen 7 5800X3D for the first time. The 16-core Ryzen 9 is priced at $519, while the 8-core Ryzen 7 costs $529.

If you were to take the gaming performance alone as a benchmark, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D would even be a good choice in comparison. In our test, the new Ryzen 7 leaves all other AMD models far behind. However, the rating is very different when it comes to applications: According to our performance index, the Ryzen 9 5950X is almost 70 percent ahead of the new model.

The reason for these strong performance differences lies in the design of the respective CPUs. The eight cores of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D are accelerated by the large cache. The processor can score points in tasks where additional cores are hardly or not at all used. In applications where all cores can usually be used, the Ryzen 7 doesn’t stand a chance against twice the number of cores as the Ryzen 9. Customers are therefore currently faced with a choice: for almost the same price, they can either use a significantly higher application or a slightly higher one get gaming performance.
