In an interview, Lead Combat Designer Brian Holinka proclaims that with WoW: Dragonflight new class-race combinations will come into play. With this, Blizzard wants to set fewer limits on character creation for WoW players in the future. A good start, but WoW players want more! On the net, fans are discussing whether Blizzard shouldn’t completely abolish the current class restrictions.
From meme to reality
Holinka surprised the WoW community with this message. Blizzard has long resisted putting WoW’s gentle giants in a villain’s costume. And let’s be honest, hardly any player can imagine a stately Taure as a “sneaky assassin”. Tauren rogues were a meme for years, nothing more. However, said joke will become a reality in the near future! Finally, Blizzard throws the concerns overboard and announces that there will be new class-race combinations with Patch 10.0.
Holinka: We’re working towards that but not all classes have the same kinda content requirements. More of this will come over time, but immediately in 10.0 we’re gonna be making Rogues, Mages and Priests available for all races, so everyone will be able to go out and make their sneaky Tauren Rogue tiptoeing on their hooves all around.
With Dragonflight, players can look forward to these nine class-race combos:
- Tauren Mage
- Highmountain Tauren Mage
- Orc Priest
- Mag’har Orc Priest
- Highmountain Tauren Priest
- Tauren Rogue
- Highmountain Tauren Rogue
- Draenei Rogue
- Lightforged draenei rogue
No player really believed that tauren and draenei rogues would actually come into play one day. Now the community is over the moon! If there are tauren rogues and orc priests, what other class/race combos are possible?
An unfulfilled dream or soon to be reality?
The restrictions on the class-race combinations are no longer up to date, at least that’s what a large part of the WoW players think. Currently, the nightborne druids and night elf paladins are the most popular. Gnome and Kul Tiran paladins are also in demand, as are Zandalari warlocks and human shamans.
Blizzard linked the previous class-race combinations with the history of the respective race. For example, the night elves were not allowed to pursue a career as a magician for a long time. The developers explained this by saying that the classic teachings of magic were frowned upon in the night elf society that lived in Teldrassil. These kaldorei blamed the Highborne for the great cataclysm that ripped the world apart 10,000 years ago.

In Cataclysm, however, the first Highborne appeared in Darnassus and offered their help to Tyrande and Co. Blizzard wrapped this story in some dialogue and quests that explained why players are now allowed to play night elf mages. For Darkspear Druids, there was a similar story in Cataclysm. The developers could theoretically use this little trick for all class-race combinations. If Blizzard is on the way to allowing all races to choose the priest class, why not just move on with paladins?
There’s no reason heroes who are connected to the Light can’t also wear plate armor and wield a maul. The best example of this are some night elves found in WoW (buy now ): Legion have joined the Order of the Silver Hand. And at the latest with the priests from the ranks of the Mag’har orcs any excuse with the lore would be obsolete. And let’s face it, theoretically you can link any religion to the Paladin class. In the past, Blizzard has done well with tauren paladins and Zandalari trolls.
New freedoms ensure more fun
The classes in WoW have long ceased to be about the story or even tradition. Blizzard seems to be rethinking that recently. In the future there will no longer be real faction borders, so why should the developers still stick to class restrictions? The races of the Horde and Alliance have been exchanging ideas with one another for years. The monks did it in Mists of Pandaria and took in every student willing to learn, no matter what race or faction they belong to. The gnomes learned the hunter trade in WoW: Legion and the tauren use two rogue daggers in Dragonflight. And the Dracthyr is also free to choose which faction they want to join. Nothing is impossible in WoW anymore! Perhaps a Zandalari troll would like to become a sorcerer in the future. And we already know from past Blizzard interviews that demon hunters will one day share their knowledge with other races.
What do you think about restrictions on class-race combinations in WoW? Should Blizzard remove all class and race boundaries? Or would you rather continue to follow the story and make some class-race combos impossible? and what race-class combo would you most like to see in WoW: Dragonflight? Tell us in the comments!
