The new MacBook Air is officially here and it has a brand new design, an M2 chip inside and more. In addition to the big picture changes that Apple mentioned on the WWDC stage, there are a few other interesting things about the 2022 MacBook Air. Head down while we round them up.
External display support
One of the biggest limitations of a MacBook Air with the original M1 chip is that it can only power one external display. Unfortunately, this same limitation still applies to the new MacBook Air with the M2 processor.
Apple says the new MacBook Air can support one external display at up to 6K resolution at 60Hz. This display can be powered at the same time as the MacBook Air’s built-in display, so technically you can have two active displays, but only one of them can be an external display.
Thinner than the original iPhone
The new MacBook Air is 11.3mm thick and weighs 2.7 pounds. This means that it is thinner than the original iPhone as well as the iPhone 3G. The original iPhone was 11.6mm thick, while the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS were 12.3mm thick.
Thunderer 3
Unlike the latest MacBook Pros and Mac Studios, the new MacBook Air uses Thunderbolt 3 rather than Thunderbolt 4.
Two Thunderbolt 3 ports support:
Charging DisplayPort Thunderbolt 3 (up to 40 Gb/s) USB 4 (up to 40 Gb/s) USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gb/s)
MagSafe chargers in color
Unlike the cables that came with your MacBook Pro, the new MacBook Air comes with a MagSafe cable that matches the color of your MacBook Air. For example, if you buy a new MacBook Air in midnight color, the MagSafe cable will also be in midnight color.
The cables also appeared in the Apple online store, but are not available for purchase. The cables are priced at $49 and are compatible with both MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. This means that MacBook Pro buyers will be able to purchase one of these cables for their MacBook Pro if they choose.
Configuration cost
Finally, some additional pricing information for the new MacBook Air. The 2022 MacBook Air starts at $1,199. For this entry-level configuration, you get:
8-core CPU 8-core GPU 8 GB shared memory 256 GB SSD
Meanwhile, if you upgrade to the $1499 configuration, you’ll get:
8-core CPU 10-core GPU 8 GB shared memory 512 GB SSD
From there, Apple offers many different upgrades for the MacBook Air. These options include upgrading to 16GB of single memory for $200 or up to 24GB of single memory for $400. You can upgrade storage from 512GB to 1TB for $200 or all the way to 2TB for $600.
What’s in the box
In the box with your new MacBook Air, you’ll find a new compact 35W dual USB-C power adapter. If you need fast charging capabilities, you can choose the 67W USB-C power adapter at no additional cost.
The 67W USB-C Power Adapter lets you quickly charge your MacBook Air up to 50 percent in 30 minutes.
Shipping date
Apple has yet to announce any shipping information for the new MacBook Air. The company is simply saying that the 2022 MacBook Air will be available sometime in July.
