Ahead of 2022, Apple TV+ was gearing up to add to its original movie roster with the big blockbuster Emancipation, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Will Smith.

However, due to the ongoing fallout from Smith choosing to attack Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars, it now appears that the film’s release has been delayed until 2023, according to a Variety report.

Once that happened, the chances of winning the Emancipation bounty—especially as long as the incident remains in recent memory—vanished.

Smith himself is now barred from attending future Oscar events over the next decade, though he could still theoretically be nominated.

In the end, over $100 million was spent on the film’s production.

What’s good news for Apple is that there are many more award-winning films on its upcoming list, including Cha Cha Real Smooth, Raymond and Ray, The Greatest Beer Run Ever and its first animated film. Luck’. Martin Scorsese’s $200 million film Killers of the Flower Moon, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is also expected to generate hype when it’s released, although it remains unclear if that film’s post-production will be completed by its 2022 debut.
