Apple has finally unveiled the new MacBook Air 2022 with an updated design, M2 processor and other changes. Apple talked about the main changes at the WWDC presentation, but the MacBook Air 2022 has other less noticeable nuances that you should be aware of. Below we will talk about them.
Support for external displays
One of the main limitations of the MacBook Air with the original M1 chip was support for just one external display. Unfortunately, this limitation also applies to the new M2 MacBook Air.
The new MacBook Air 2022 supports one external display at 6K resolution and 60Hz refresh rate. The display can work simultaneously with the built-in one, so it’s technically possible to use two active displays, but only one of them will be external.
Thinner than the original iPhone
The new MacBook Air is just 11.3mm thick and weighs 1.2kg. This means that the laptop is thinner than the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G model. The first iPhone was 11.6mm thick, while the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS were 12.3mm thick.
Thunderbolt 3
Unlike the latest MacBook Pro and Mac Studio, the new MacBook Air has Thunderbolt 3 ports rather than Thunderbolt 4.
Two Thunderbolt 3 ports support:
- charging
- display port
- Thunderbolt 3 (up to 40 Gbps)
- USB 4 (up to 40 Gb/s)
- USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbps)
MagSafe cable colors
Unlike the cables that come with the MacBook Pro, the cables that come with the new MacBook Air come in the color of the laptop itself. For example, if you buy a gold MacBook Air 2022, you will also get a gold MagSafe cable.
The cables are also available from Apple’s online store, but are not yet available for purchase. They cost $49 and are compatible with MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. This means that MacBook Pro owners will also be able to buy a new cable in the color of their laptop.
Cost and configuration
The new MacBook Air 2022 starts at $1,199. In the basic configuration you get:
- 8-core CPU
- 8-core GPU
- 8 GB RAM
- 256 GB SSD
If you choose the $1499 configuration, you’ll get:
- 8-core CPU
- 10-core GPU
- 8 GB RAM
- 512 GB SSD
Other upgrades are available for the new MacBook Air, including 16GB of RAM for $200 or 24GB of RAM for $400. You can upgrade from 512GB to 1TB for $200 or 2TB for $600.
