Apple introduced an amazing new feature of macOS. Called Continuity Camera, this new feature allows you to use the iPhone’s camera instead of a Mac’s webcam.

The opening conference of WWDC 2022 took place this Monday, June 6. Apple mainly took advantage of the keynote to unveil the iOS 16, watchOS 9, iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura updates. The operating system of iMacs, Macs and MacBooks is also enriched with a plethora of new features this year.

Craig Federighi, head of software at Apple, notably demonstratedContinuity Camera, a system that allows you to use an iPhone instead of the webcam of a Mac or a Studio Display. Concretely, it suffices to place the iPhone at the very top of the screen, behind the camera, using a dedicated support. Apple will put on sale support designed in partnership with Belkin by the end of the year.

The advantages of an iPhone as a webcam

As explained during the keynote, the computer automatically detects the presence of the iPhone. There is no need to plug anything in. No need to open FaceTime or the photo app before fixing it. The MacBook will directly transfer the video stream to macOS applications compatible with this technology. FaceTime isn’t the only supported video conferencing app. Popular services like Microsoft Teams, Zoom or WebEx are also compatible.

To ensure a smooth experience, Apple relies on Continuity. This feature, at the center of the ecosystem developed by the brand, allows you to start a task on your iPhone or iPad and finish it on your MacBook. Thanks to this system, the iPhone and the MacBook work in perfect synergy during a video call.

The option makes it possible to overcome the default webcam integrated into Apple computers. Rather than being satisfied with the camera of the computer, Apple proposes to take advantage of the performance of the main camera from the iPhone. By going through the triple or double photo sensor of a recent iPhone, it is possible to improve the image of calls. Indeed, the camera of an iPhone is much more powerful than the webcam of a Mac. On the most recent Macs, Apple is satisfied with a 1080p camera.

In addition, the option allows the use of functions like Centered framewhich keeps the user in the center of the image during a call, or studio lighting, which will apply an artificial light source. Unsurprisingly, the feature is reserved for branded products. Can’t use iPhone to replace camera on Windows PC.

Nevertheless, Apple is not not ready to give up on the webcam of his MacBooks. The Californian giant is aware that not all Mac users have invested in an iPhone. This innovation, however, suggests that Apple is preparing for a distant future where Macs will be cameraless.
