Over a year ago, Nightdive Studios released a remaster of Quake, originally developed by id Tech. Now the team has the next classic on their radar with the original Unreal from 1998. At least that’s according to a tweet from Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick. Allegedly, after the Quake reboot, Cliff Bleszinski contacted Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney on behalf of Nightdive to propose a remaster of the first Unreal part.

Unreals as a remaster: Epic is keeping a low profile

Specifically, the Nightdive boss writes: “After our Quake remaster, @therealcliffyb on our behalf @TimSweeneyEpic politely in the hope that we could give Unreal the same treatment… and I guess if you’re all for it then leave a message so Tim knows.” While Sweeney has yet to comment, Bleszinski comments the facts as follows: “For legal reasons, I say nothing about it.” At the time, Cliff Bleszinski acted alongside James Schmalz as Unreal’s lead designer – so he wouldn’t be the worst contact person.

It is up to the reader whether Bleszinski is just doing this ignorantly and actually has more to say. Nightdive may lean a little out of the window to put pressure on Epic and thread a rapprochement that hasn’t worked so far. However, it would also be possible that Nightdive landed the order long ago and that the topic of the new Unreal edition should be “trending” on Twitter before the announcement is made official.

Regardless of Nightdive, remastered versions of video games are all the rage. Command and Conquer, Quake, Crysis, Resident Evil and Mass Effect – the list is not even complete. With that in mind, it seems only a matter of time before Epic or whoever Unreal does too breathes new life.

The Quake remaster developed by Nightdive enriched the FPS classic with 4K and widescreen resolution, improved models, dynamic lighting, anti-aliasing, depth of field and some new levels. Machine Games also contributed new levels. Also, the original Trent Reznor soundtrack has been restored after it was no longer included in digital versions due to an expired copyright. Reznor also gave the classic a new title track. All of this was free to owners of the original Quake.

Nightdive Studios has also been responsible for remasters and re-releases of Blood, Doom 64, Sin, Power Slave, Strife, Shadow Man and more. Nightdive is currently working on a remake of the original System Shock, due out later this year. According to developers the game is currently in its final stages.
