Apple defected to Intel – this happened on June 6th. Every day, PC Games Hardware dares to take a look back at the young but eventful history of the computer.
…2005: It was designed to compete against the dominant combination of Microsoft operating systems and Intel’s x86 CPUs: the Power PC architecture based on RISC processors co-developed by Apple, IBM and Motorola. But the development of the platform stagnated – the long-promised acceleration to 3 GHz did not materialize, heat problems and high energy requirements make it difficult to install the power chips in notebooks. Intel’s mobile processors, on the other hand, promise high performance with low power consumption – and so on June 6 Apple announces the previously unthinkable, the change to the former “enemy”: In the future, Apple’s Macintosh computers will be based on Intel processors. After the switch from 68K to Power PC chips in the 1990s and the switch from Mac OS to OS X, this is the third upheaval in just a few years that means great effort for software developers. Nevertheless: The change leads to success, both technically and economically, and enemies become close partners. In addition, another previously unthinkable combination is possible: suddenly Microsoft operating systems can also run on Apple systems via Bootcamp.
