June 5, 1977: Apple launches its most popular personal computer of the future, Apple II, which opened up new possibilities in the field of revolutionary development of the company.
By first presenting the device at a computer show, Apple was able to impress thousands of fans who spoke of the Apple II as a revolutionary machine. The base model went to the retail network at a price of $1298, and it was supplied without a monitor.
Although the company had already released the Apple-I earlier, it was more amateur. The new Apple II model was more advanced and you can already see in it the hallmarks of Apple computers that will become characteristic of the company’s future devices.
Apple II: a computer ahead of its time
In addition to an attractive body, Apple II had color graphics. The presence of a powerful MOS 6502 processor with a frequency of 1 MHz, 4 Kb memory with the possibility of expanding up to 48 Kb, BASIC-based software, a sound card and an integrated keyboard opened up new opportunities for device owners, complemented by a convenient interface. The Apple II used audio cassettes to store data and load programs, but a year later Apple released a floppy disk drive to replace them.
The Apple II became Apple’s most popular device, bringing in more than $770,000 in annual revenue. A year later, this figure reached $7.9 million, and two years later – $49 million.
With the release of the ill-fated Apple III, the company was unable to surpass these results. Even the more successful Macintosh could not beat the record demand for the Apple II, which remained incredibly high for many years. The device was actually produced until the end of 1993. Apple just cared about his modifications.
