In a new report, the WHO says that 14.9 million deaths can be linked to the covid-19 pandemic’s first two years, far more than the 5.4 million deaths reported by the countries of the world.

The WHO’s calculations include both direct deaths caused by the disease itself, but also deaths that have come from the pandemic’s effects on healthcare and society at large. However, the majority of deaths should still be directly linked to the disease.

20 countries that represent a total of half the world’s population have accounted for over 80 percent of global mortality. Countries such as Australia, China, Japan and Norway are among the countries that have had the lowest excess mortality per 100,000 inhabitants.
