Alexander Zverev avoided another early exit on Wednesday when he started his Madrid Open title defence with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback victory against former US Open champion Marin Cilic. Third seeded Zverev wrapped up the second-round game, after a bye in the opening round, with an ace after 2 hours 17 minutes. He had earlier lost four games in a row to concede the first set after leading by a break. Zverev next meets American Sebastian Korda or Lorenzo Musetti of Italy.
