The problems continue for BOE, supplier of OLED panels for Apple since the iPhone 12. The Chinese manufacturer was already struggling to maintain its production rate due to component shortages and a subcontractor who favored LG Display, if although there has been talk of two drops in production estimates since the start of the year:
Shortage of semiconductors: Apple supplier BOE will revise its production of slabs downwards
OLED screens: BOE continues to suffer from the shortage of semiconductors
In addition to these difficulties in producing enough OLED panels to meet demand, BOE would have modified its product without notifying Apple, according to the site The Electric. When the Cupertino company realized it, it would have stopped using BOE products entirely. However, the site understands that this cut is not final and Apple would prefer to keep this third supplier on hand, in addition to Samsung and LG who provide most of the panels.
Until then, BOE’s role has remained minor, with deliveries up to 10% of iPhone OLED panels in 2021 alone. The company, however, has great ambitions, since they intended to overtake LG in 2023, a future perhaps compromised today.
