The British Museum, located in London, United Kingdom, is a museum dedicated to human history and culture. It is one of the oldest museums in the world but also one of the largest. But, did you know that the British Museum is also older than the United States of America?
The British Museum was founded in 1753. It then opened to the public for the first time in 1759. So this museum was established 24 years before the United States of Americafounded following the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
This museum is filled with collections as varied as they are enriching with more than seven million objects. These are also among the largest in the world and come from all walks of life. They are the symbol of history and human culture from their origins to today.
Moreover, the British Museum now bears the status of “non-departmental public body”. This allows it to be financed by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. Every year, six million visitors go there. It is also the most visited tourist spot in England.
