To carry out its PS5 game service plans, Sony is pumping a significant amount of money into AccelByte. A company that will provide its expertise in supporting this kind of titles.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has one ambition: to release 10 PS5 service games by 2026. But above all not by sacrificing its narrative solo experiences for which the manufacturer is renowned. And little by little, the company is strengthening in the sector so as not to eat a wall.
Sony is investing millions for its future PS5 service games
Sony Interactive Entertainment has just spent a large sum in the company AccelByte as discovered by TechCrunch. Does it ring a bell ? As players, it’s pretty normal.
AccelByte is a company founded in 2016 by Junaili Lie, a former Epic Games engineer. A platform that aims to help developers by providing them with the backend services and tools they need for their multiplayer games. And this for the various layers of the experience: matchmaking, lobby, cloud progression, season passes or even servers. In short, everything that allows the proper functioning of your favorite games.
This turnkey solution is available to everyone. Indie creators like the steamrollers designing AAA PS5s.
A lot of creators started making service games and realized how much it was difficult to build a scalable backend platform from scratch. This leads to problems such as delays in game delivery, complicated evolution at launch, and a buildup of multiplayer features that are never implemented.
Junaili Lie, CEO of AccelByte.
AccelByte already has known clients such as Remedy Entertainment (Max Payne, Alan Wake 2…), Deep Silver (Saints Row…) and KRAFTON (PUBG). Before launching with his box, Juaili Lie set up all of Epic Games’ online backend infrastructure which powers the store, Fortnite, Unreal Engine Marketplace, Epic Online Services…
The Last of Us Factions, new IP from Bungie (Destiny)…
Building massive, scalable worlds online requires significant technical infrastructure for creators to realize their vision.
A precious help for Sony and its PS5 service games which will grow like mushrooms. Indeed, Naugthy Dog is on The Last of Us Factions, Insomniac Games (Marvel’s Wolverine, Spider-Man 2) has a multi-secret game, Firewalk Studio also just like Haven, Jade Raymond’s studio (Assassin’s Creed), which is on a multiplayer PS5 exclusive. And that’s just a taste.
Devation Games, which includes former members of Treyarch (Call of Duty Black Ops), may be bringing live service components into their upcoming PlayStation 5 game. Bungie, which was bought by PlayStation, will feed the Destiny franchise and work in parallel on a new license. A string of games probably available on PC, the manufacturer’s new workhorse.
The amount of investment in AccelByte is not known. However, the company recently received $60 million, so the check made by Sony must be significant. Chinese giant NetEase and Galaxy Interactive are also credited as recent investors. With all this program, it will be necessary to renew the subscription to PS Plus.
