Sony continues to invest in external studios. The software company AccelByte recently received a cash injection. Backend tools for live service games are created there.

Sony not only regularly takes over smaller and larger studios. The company also occasionally makes investments that do not result in a majority holding. A billion dollar sum flowed into the “Fortnite” developer Epic Games, for example.

The software company AccelByte was also able to secure a cash injection, in which Sony is involved. The latest round of financing raised $60 million. In addition to the PS5 manufacturer, Galaxy Interactive and NetEase are also involved as financiers, who have repeatedly contributed money.

Backend tools for live service games

You probably haven’t heard of AccelByte. Essentially, the startup is responsible for developing backend tools that can help power live service games. The systems offer features like analytics, in-game monetization, and more. Ultimately, it’s all about versatility and scalability based on the needs of a specific product.

It’s worth noting that Junaili Lie, the founder of AccelByte, was previously a resident of Epic Games. The aim of the relatively young company is to provide large and small developers with tools of AAA caliber.

The startup was founded in 2016. According to Lie, while working at Epic Games, there was nothing flexible enough to support the high backend requirements for the then nascent Epic platform, with their construction his team was tasked with.

“Many of the developers have started developing live service games while realizing how difficult it is to build a scalable backend platform from the ground up,” said Lie in an interview. “This leads to delayed release dates, titles that struggle to scale at launch, and a backlog of live service features that never get implemented in-game.”

It’s no longer a secret that Sony wants to invest more in live service games. Buying Bungie for a whopping $3.6 billion is part of that strategy. With the support of such companies ten live service games by 2026 be put on the market. This was pointed out by Sony’s Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki last February.
