Runes are small stones with magical glyphs that can be inserted into socketed items. They differ from other insertable items in Diablo 2 Resurrected in that runes not only have fixed magical attributes, but also impart even more wondrous properties to the item when inserted into an item in the correct order as a specific rune word. In the game, runes appear with

as an item drop.
3.5.2022: With the Balance patch 2.4 for Diablo 2 Resurrected some runewords have been revised and new runewords have been introduced. These changes have been added to the article. This table of contents will help you quickly and easily find the section of the rune special you are looking for.
Common runes
Runes in Diablo 2 Resurrected are listed from most common to least common: El, Eld, Tir, Nef, Eth, Ith, Tal, Ral, Ort, Amn, Shael and Thul are pretty common. The runes Ral, place and valley are also obtained as a quest reward in Act 5. If you’re thinking of freeing up space in your treasure chest, discard those runes or sell them to one of the in-game vendors and keep all of the runes from Sol until Zod.
Semi-rare runes
Listed from most common to least common, these are: Sol, Dol, Hel, Io, Lum, Ko, Fal, Lem, Pul, Um. Some of these runes are more valuable than others depending on their magical properties and their use in runewords or crafting recipes.
Extremely rare runes
Listed from most common to least common, these are: Mal, Ist, Gul, Vex, Ohm, Lo, Sur, Ber, Jah, Cham, Zod. If so, only trade them for very good items!
runewords
If the player inserts specific rune combinations in the correct order into an item with that exact number of sockets and the correct item type, the item’s name will change to a “unique” name, displayed in gold font color. Also, the item gains additional magical powers depending on the runeword used. You can read more about runewords on the relevant pages in this article.
