This is an announcement that surprised more than one. Indeed, Embracer, a Swedish video game company, has announced that it has reached an agreement with Square Enix to buy back part of their studios and licenses.
This news fell on Monday morning: Square Enix is separating from part of its studios and licenses. Indeed, in a press release, Embrace said to have reached an agreement with Square Enix for the acquisition of the development studios Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal and Square Enix Montreal.
In addition, this acquisition, amounting to 300 million dollars (or approximately 285 million euros), also concerns large Western licenses from Square Enix. Since the studio is parting ways with no less than 50 games and licenseswhose tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thiefas well as Legacy of Kain. For the moment, it is still only an agreement between the two companies, the final acquisition should be done later this year.
However, Square Enix still retains control of certain Western licenses such as JustCause, Life is Strange or Outriders. Or games developed by partner studios. Thus, Square Enix seems to wish to concentrate on its Japanese studios, while keeping Square Enix External Studios and Square Enix Collective.
