The Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro and iPad Air is a phenomenal accessory that takes iPad to the next level with a gorgeous backlit keyboard, great trackpad, and beautiful design.

If you recently purchased a Magic Keyboard for your iPad, you might be wondering how long the keyboard battery lasts, how to charge it, and how to check the battery life of the Magic Keyboard. Certainly reasonable questions, especially considering that most keyboards have a battery. So, you’ve been digging around in the settings, looked in the “Battery” section, and it doesn’t seem to say anything about the battery life of the iPad Magic Keyboard, right?

And this is where you might be surprised; The Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro and iPad Air has no battery at all.

How to charge the iPad Magic Keyboard?

The iPad Magic Keyboard does not have a battery, so it does not need to be charged.

You can connect the USB-C power cable to the power port on the Magic Keyboard, which will however charge the iPad via pass-through.

How to check battery level of iPad Magic Keyboard?

The iPad Magic Keyboard doesn’t have a battery to charge, so you don’t need to check the battery level either.

The Magic Keyboard will work as long as the connected iPad has a battery or is otherwise connected to a power source.

How does the iPad Magic Keyboard work without a battery?

But how does a Magic Keyboard without a battery get backlit? How does the trackpad work? And why then the charging port on the side of the Magic Keyboard?

It turns out that the iPad Pro itself powers the Magic Keyboard via the Smart Connector on the back of the device (it looks like three small circles on the back of the iPad Pro/Air).

The charging port on the Magic Keyboard is pass-through, meaning you can plug a USB-C cable into the Magic Keyboard and it just transfers the charge to the iPad Pro, which is magnetically connected via the Smart Connector. And it will even charge your Apple Pencil if it’s plugged in. Pretty cool engineering feat, huh?

Pass-through power also lets you use your iPad Pro or iPad Air’s built-in USB-C port for other accessories like an external drive, SD card reader, USB-C hub, or whatever else you have.

iPad Magic Keyboard

Whether you have an iPad Pro 12.9″, iPad Pro 11″, or iPad Air 10.9″, the Magic Keyboard is a fantastic accessory that really takes iPad to the next level of utility. Check it out if you don’t already have it.

And as you now know, you don’t have to worry about battery life and you don’t even need to charge your Magic Keyboard, it just works!
