The PowerToys 0.58 have been provided by Microsoft with many improvements. In this version, many old components have been removed and replaced with new ones. In addition, the native use on ARM64 is now being prepared.

With this version, the old WebBrowser controls have been replaced by WebView 2, which are already used under Windows 10 and Windows 11. .NET Core 3.1 was also removed and replaced by the current .NET 6. Another change is that the settings no longer run on XAML Islands, but on the more modern WinUI 3.

The list of corrections is again very long and affects all individual components in the PowerToys. Some of the changes have already been corrected in HotFix 0.57. Here is just a small selection:

  • Always on Top: The top position of the window is reset for some applications.
  • Fancy Zones:
  • The resolution has been removed from the screen identifier so the zones don’t reset when the resolution changes.
  • Scaling the canvas layout when editing to match the new scale/resolution.
  • File Explorer:
  • Added new file types to development preview (.reg, .xslt, .xsd, .wsdl, .ino, .pde, .razor).
  • Fixed an existing “file still in use” issue in the dev file preview.
  • Dev file preview can now interpret file extensions case insensitively.
  • Markdown preview now respects dark mode settings on Windows.
  • PowerToys Run
  • Web search and URI plugins now have better default browser detection code.
  • Fix for the Services plugin not correctly handling service names with spaces.
  • Fix for terminal plugin not recognizing profiles properly.
  • The last VSCode Insider version was not showing up in the VSCode Workspaces plugin.
  • VSCode Workspaces now finds portable installations of VS Code.
  • Fixed an issue launching PowerToys Run when the desktop is not initialized.
  • Settings: Settings no longer runs as administrator when run as administrator.
