IT House June 2 news, Win11’s native applications (such as File Explorer) and other Shell applications are designed with rounded corners and Fluent Design elements (such as Acrylic) by default. In addition to rounded corners, another important feature of Windows 11 is materials such as Mica, which make the desktop background color more suitable for the program.
Mica is similar to Acrylic’s design, but it works slightly differently. According to Microsoft, Windows’ Mica material creates a “color hierarchy” by unifying the background and the application’s color to distinguish multiple processes in an application, such as File Explorer.
Unfortunately, developers cannot currently enable this new design in their Win32 applications. Now Microsoft has confirmed that starting with version 22H2, developers will be allowed to enable Mica/Acrylic design in containers/windows of traditional Win32 applications (desktop programs).
The Mica design currently exists in the Desktop Window Manager (DWM), and Microsoft will help developers adopt the Mica/Acrylic design in their Win32 desktop applications through a new Windows 11 variable – “DWM_SYSTEMBACKDROP_TYPE”.
According to Microsoft, developers will have four constants to choose from:
-
DWMSBT_AUTO: This is the default behavior. If you choose this constant, DWM will automatically determine the system background material for the application window.
-
DWMSBT_NONE: If the developer has a custom design for their application window, the Mica or Acrylic selection can be skipped. For example, Spotify has adopted its own title design. And when you set this value, Microsoft will not draw any system background for it.
-
DWMSBT_MAINWINDOW: Apply the background material effect corresponding to the long window.
-
DWMSBT_TRANSIENTWINDOW: Apply the background material effect corresponding to the transient window.
-
DWMSBT_TABBEDWINDOW: Apply the background material effect corresponding to the window with the title bar.
IT Home has learned that Microsoft also said that this new variable only applies to Windows 11 22H2 (Build 22621). In other words, if the developer is targeting an earlier version of Windows 11, this new design won’t be reflected.
