IT House May 3 news, according to 9to5 Mac reports, the European Union issued a statement of disapproval earlier today, criticizing how Apple limited NFC technology on the iPhone to its own payment platform. A Bloomberg report now shows thatPayPal is one of the companies backing the EU’s antitrust lawsuit against Apple Pay.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the report said PayPal helped the European Commission “initiated a formal antitrust lawsuit against Apple and Apple Pay.” PayPal, which offers NFC-based “tap to pay” functionality for Android users, is not allowed to offer the same option on the iPhone.

Bloomberg said PayPal was only “one of many companies” to formally complain to the European Commission about the matter.

The iPhone 6 was the first Apple smartphone to feature NFC technology, which allows two devices to transfer data when they are in close proximity to each other. However, NFC on the iPhone is unique to Apple Pay, and the company’s platform allows users to register their credit and debit cards to pay in stores using their phone or Apple Watch.

In 2017, Apple partially opened up access to the iPhone’s NFC chip to developers of iOS 11. However, the company has never allowed payment applications to use this API. In a recent statement, Apple said Apple Pay is just “one of many payment options available to consumers in Europe,” even though it’s the only NFC-enabled option on the iPhone.

Earlier this year, Apple released Tap and Pay for the iPhone, which turns the phone into a contactless card terminal for receiving payments through third-party apps. However, this still doesn’t allow other apps to offer their own NFC payment solutions on the iPhone.
