IT House May 3 news, the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is expected to be granted so-called statutory powers, but today there are reports that,The UK government has shelved the plan.
The CMA said last year that Apple and Google had too much power,And announced an investigation into Apple and Google’s monopoly in the mobile app market. At the time, the U.K. government announced plans for new antitrust powers that would allow it to overturn business decisions made by tech giants such as Apple, with fines of up to 10 percent of turnover.
However, according to the Financial Times today,Plans to grant CMA statutory powers have now been abandoned. The government’s new legislative plan is not expected to include a bill to provide statutory support for the CMA’s digital markets arm, the Financial Times, citing people familiar with the matter, said. The Queen’s Speech, expected to be delivered on May 10, will confirm the news.
IT House understands that if this news is confirmed, although Apple and Google will not get rid of the shackles of British antitrust, the CMA will not be able to directly demand policy changes or impose fines, only to make recommendations to parliament.
The CMA’s final report is expected to make the following demands on Apple and Google:
-
Switch between iOS and Android phones more easily without losing functionality or data.
-
Allows installation of apps from methods other than the App Store or Play Store.
-
Allows users to choose how they pay instead of being tied to Apple and Google’s payment systems.
