A new sale has started on Steam celebrating Roguelikes, Roguelites, Soulslikes and Metroidvanias. The discount campaign runs from May 2nd to May 9th and reduces genre classics like Dead Cells and Hades as well as Soulslike hits like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
Steam has started a new discount campaign and wants to enlighten players about a confusing (sub)genre. What are roguelikes, roguelites, soulslikes or metroidvanias and what distinguishes them? The sale, called Going Rogue: A Festival of Perseverance, started on May 2nd and will last until May 9th at 7 p.m.
New sale with genre focus
In the Steam blog, the game platform even gives a small genre crash course for the sale. What distinguishes the different games? At least with roguelikes and roguelites, this is a bit confusing. Both are derived from the 1980 game Rogue. This featured randomly generated dungeons and permatod.
Today, the genre of roguelikes and roguelites is very open, which usually makes categorization a little more difficult. Roguelikes mostly still use the procedurally generated content and the permatod of the great role model rogue. But there are also other games that fall under this genre, but deviate from the well-known mechanics and bring new features with them, such as action roguelikes.
Roguelites, on the other hand, do not see the specified rules of rogues quite as narrowly and do not make the permatod quite as permanent. For example, players can continue to use or level up points, skills or items after death. It’s sort of a “light” version of the rogue idea. Many of the newer games in the genre actually fall into the roguelite category rather than roguelike.
In the next two categories of sales, things are a bit simpler. Soulslike naturally have the Souls series from FromSoftware as a model. These games are characterized by their high level of difficulty, which inevitably leads to many deaths. However, players can continue to improve their skills and thus rise to the challenge. Metroidvanias are influenced by the Metroid and Castlevania franchises. By the way, roguevanias are roguelikes with mechanics from Castlevania, but not Metroid.
