On June 3, personal social media Twitter was one of the first major technology companies in 2020 to announce that employees could work from home “forever”, but Elon Musk’s recent remarks about remote work may lead to tweets. Another uproar within Te.
According to foreign media reports, Musk issued an ultimatum to Tesla and SpaceX employees in an internal letter on Tuesday:Either go back to the office and go to work, or leave.
At the same time, Musk has not forgotten in his emails to dig at companies that are more tolerant of remote work.
“Of course, some companies don’t require this, but when was the last time they released a great new product?” Musk wrote in a company-wide email. “It’s been a while.”
Musk declined to comment on whether the return to the office would ultimately apply to Twitter. A Twitter spokesman also did not respond to a request for comment, but said Twitter has no plans to change its telecommuting policy.
“Our priority is to get our employees to work where they feel most productive and creative,” the spokesperson said.
If Musk does complete the Twitter acquisition, employees may not have a choice.
Musk’s stance on remote work is the exact opposite of that of Twitter founder Jack Dorsey. Although Dorsey is Musk’s friend, he is known for his bohemian lifestyle. Dorsey says he finds inspiration for work in Africa, Myanmar and at the company’s headquarters in San Francisco.
When Twitter initially announced it would allow company employees to work from home indefinitely, Dorsey sent a company-wide email with the subject line “Love where you work.”
“We’re serious about distributed labor, and we’ve shown we can do it,” he wrote. Even before the pandemic hit in late 2019, Dorsey said he planned to encourage “distributed labor.”
“I don’t worry about any signs of a slowdown in the business we’re assigning right now, and I do think we have to build a company that’s not entirely reliant on the San Francisco headquarters,” Dorsey said on an earnings call in February. As we look forward to, we’re building a talent pool with more people working remotely … we should build our company around that.” “I don’t have any plans for this year, but I do hope to travel.”
Twitter is one of several tech companies pushing to diversify talent through telecommuting. After Airbnb announced in May that employees could work from home forever, CEO Brian Chesky said office work “comes from the pre-digital age.” Likewise, companies like Apple and Microsoft have been forced to adjust their return-to-work policies due to widespread employee opposition.
The ability of companies to offer remote work opportunities has become a big plus. A survey last year found that 62 percent of Americans said they would trade a lower salary in exchange for working from home forever. In addition, three economists say remote work has little or no impact on employees’ ability to get work done and may even increase productivity.
Musk’s views on remote work could affect his relationship with Twitter employees. In a regulatory filing last month, Twitter warned that Musk’s acquisition could affect the company’s ability to attract and retain employees.
Reports on Wednesday that Musk’s planned $44 billion takeover of Twitter has sparked disgust among many Twitter employees, some of whom questioned how Musk would change the company’s culture. Last month Musk said the “ethical expectations” of Twitter employees would be extreme.
“Economist slaps Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who says working from home makes people lazy and needs to stay at the company for 40 hours a week or leave”
