Researchers from Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communication Technology (NICT) have used a variety of emerging technologies to use glass tubes as the transmission medium, along with a technique called wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). The transmission bandwidth is extended to a record 20THz. With the help of some other new optical amplification and signal modulation techniques,The team achieved a record-breaking speed of 1.02Pb/s and sent data over 51.7 kilometers of fiber optic cable.

In December 2020, the team also set a transmission record of 1.01Pb/s. But transmissions at the time required some complex signal processing to interpret the data, which meant it was difficult to roll out at scale.
