IT House reported on June 2, according to data from consulting agency DSCC, in the first quarter of 2022, foldable smartphone shipments increased by 571% year-on-year to 2.22 million units. But it is down 47% from the record high of 4.2 million in 4Q21.

Foldable Smartphone Shipments by Brand

Samsung continued to dominate the category, but its share fell to 74%, Huawei’s share rose to 20%, and no other brand’s share exceeded 2%.

IT Home understands that, by model,Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 leads the market for three consecutive quarters with 51% share.Galaxy Z Fold 3 holds second place for third consecutive quarter, but is almost overtaken by Huawei P50 Pocket, these three models accounted for 91% of the share, and the share of other models did not exceed 2.5%. Clamshell foldable phones like the Z Flip 3 and P50 Pocket accounted for 70% share, the highest share since 3Q20.

Report author Ross Young, co-founder and CEO of DSCC, said: “While 2022 will be a challenging year for most display applications, foldable smartphones will see strong growth. We expect foldable smartphones Shipments will grow 107% to more than 16 million units, and foldable smartphone panel shipments will increase by 102% to more than 20 million units. Driving the growth are Samsung’s upcoming Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4, along with three other Contribution of new models launched by each brand in 2H22. One of the models to watch in 2022 will be the Fold 4, which we believe Samsung has recently raised its expectations for, and expects the Fold 4 to match the Flip 4 Compared to the faster growth, this could portend prices lower than last year’s $1,799.”
