Google’s plethora of messaging apps has become a joke in the industry. Who remembers Hello,Inbox, the different versions of Hangouts? Not many people, and that’s good. Since 2020 and the establishment of a new boss for its communication apps in the person of Javier Soltero, the search engine has the ambition to pursue a more coherent policy in this area.
New example today with the announcement of the merger between Duo and Meet, two video calling applications, which will live under the same banner, in this case Duo. At the end of last year, however, the rumor advanced that the two apps were going to live their lives in parallel.
In the coming weeks, Google will add Meet functions within Duo – which was originally designed for calls between friends or family, while Meet is moving towards professional or business uses.
In the near future, Duo will integrate virtual funds, content sharing, a meeting format with text discussions, or the possibility of scheduling appointments. These “pro” functions will not distort the more personal ones, such as filters and effects during calls. Call history, contacts and messages will remain in place. Google says it wants to integrate the two applications in the most thoughtful way possible.
Eventually, ie by the end of the year, Duo will be renamed Meet, while the current Meet will become Meet Original. This last app is destined to become obsolete (why keep it simple, at the same time). In the meantime, Duo users don’t have to download anything, they can continue to use their app.
