Global smartphone shipments are declining this year, with analysts predicting total shipments in 2022 to be lower than 2021 due to global uncertainty coupled with weaker demand. However, according to IDC, Apple with the iPhone is likely to be the “least affected vendor” in this scenario.

Smartphone shipments will fall by 3.5% to 1.31 billion units in 2022, according to a report from the analyst firm. Previously, IDC predicted industry growth of 1.6% in 2022, but this is no longer the case.

The firm’s experts explain that there are many reasons why the smartphone market is weaker this year, including inflation and geopolitical tensions around the world. However, the lockdowns in China caused by the increase in COVID-19 cases are certainly having a big impact on the market. As a result of these lockdowns and global uncertainty, both demand and supply are shrinking.

While all technology companies are affected by these situations, IDC believes that Apple will be less affected than its competitors. This is because Apple has better control over its supply chain, and most consumers in the high-end segment are less affected by inflation and other economic problems.

The biggest decline in the smartphone market expected in 2022 is in Europe, with shipments down 22%. The Chinese market is expected to shrink by 11.5% by the end of the year, while other regions of Asia are expected to grow slightly by 3%.

Fortunately, IDC expects that the decline in smartphone shipments is temporary and that the market will soon return to growth. The analyst firm predicts a 5 percent growth in the smartphone industry next year. IDC also believes semiconductor supply issues will ease in the second half of 2022, which will positively impact smartphone shipments.
