Discord makes messaging with others easier with the new “Text Chat in Voice Channels” feature. This new tool is a Zoom-like text chat feature specifically for Discord voice channels. At the same time, users can leave a link, text, GIF, emoticons in the chat during video calls.

Non-community servers will have text chat in voice channels by default, and community servers will have a period of time during which they can enable or disable this feature. According to The Verge, if this feature is not selected and disabled, it will automatically be enabled on all servers by June 15th.

There will also be a new dedicated chat icon for those who want to include messages in voice chats. When someone posts a chat to a Discord voice channel, there will be a preview of the new message in the top right corner. Those who have not joined the call can also check messages; they can press the chat button by hovering over the voice channel.

Before text chat in voice channels, voice channel users had to create a separate chat channel in order to send links or type a message. This can be inconvenient and even confusing for those who wish to use a voice call via text message. This new feature ensures the continuity and organization of the conversation in Discord.

What’s new for moderators

To help community servers prepare, we’re giving server owners and moderators the ability to choose which roles can use text chat in a voice channel, and which voice channels this new dedicated chat has.

Voice channels will also now have access to the same text permissions as text channels. In the new Voice Channel Chat Permissions category, you can Send Messages, Add Reactions, Use External Emoji, and Use External Stickers. Text chat will be enabled on all servers by June 29th while retaining existing role and voice channel permissions.

What do you think of the new feature? It looks like it will be a welcome addition to the platform. Will you use text chat in Discord Voice channels?
