The first European metro line to be covered by 5G will run south of Paris between the stations of Pont de Sèvres and Noisy Champs. The commissioning of this network is scheduled for 2025, at the same time as the actual start-up of this new, fully automatic transport section.
Totem, a subsidiary of Orange, has win the equipment contract for the 16 stations that will punctuate the 33 km journey of this “15 South” line. The originality – and the difficulty of the project – lies in the fact that the entire route is underground. The platforms are buried at 48 m. About 1,000 routers and communication equipment will be distributed within the infrastructures of this future line.
Advantage compared to other lines previously equipped for cellular connections, the 15 South includes from the start the air-conditioned technical rooms necessary for proper operation. The four mobile operators will then rent this network so that their respective subscribers can connect to it transparently.
The Grand Paris Express project provides for 3 other routes – also automatic – which will surround the capital and serve the outer suburbs. With 15 South, lines 16, 17 and 18 will form a total route of 200 km – also covered in 5G – passing through 68 stations. Completion of the entire project is expected in 2030.
