The European Commission has accused Apple of restricting third-party services from accessing the iPhone’s NFC module, stifling competition in the iOS mobile wallet segment.

The agency believes that Apple is abusing its dominant position in the iPhone mobile wallet market: “By restricting access to the standard technology used for in-store (NFC) contactless mobile device payments, Apple is limiting competition in the iOS mobile wallet market.”

European Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager argues that access to NFC is a basic requirement for viable mobile wallet services, and Apple’s ban “stifles innovation and discourages third-party mobile wallets.”

The agency will conduct an investigation before making any decision regarding the iPhone manufacturer.
