The backlit keyboard on the iPad Magic Keyboard usually lights up when you connect the Magic Keyboard to an iPad Pro or iPad Air. But sometimes it doesn’t, and sometimes the iPad Magic Keyboard backlight doesn’t work.
However, this is usually an easy fix, so don’t worry if you find that the key backlighting isn’t working properly with the iPad Magic Keyboard.
Troubleshooting Backlit iPad Magic Keyboard Not Working
Let’s take a look at some basic troubleshooting steps for backlit Magic Keyboard on iPad Pro and iPad Air when it’s not backlit properly.
iPad Pro / Air must be charged and turned on for the keyboard backlight to work
A quick note: Your iPad Pro or iPad Air must be charged and turned on for the backlit Magic Keyboard to work. Thus, if the device is turned off or the battery is low, the backlight of the keys is not illuminated. Keep this in mind, since the iPad’s battery has run out, you’ll need to charge it before you start troubleshooting.
Disconnect and reconnect Magic Keyboard to iPad
Sometimes the connection between iPad and Magic Keyboard is not secure or registered.
As such, the easiest initial troubleshooting trick is to simply unplug the Magic Keyboard from the iPad and then plug it back in.
Make sure the contact points are not covered by any material or dirt and the Magic Keyboard is securely connected via the magnetic connector.
Make sure the keyboard backlight is on and the brightness is up.
You may find that the keyboard backlight has been turned off completely, or the brightness is so dim that you don’t notice it when it’s on. If so, simply increasing the brightness will solve the problem. Setting up your iPad Magic Keyboard backlight is easy:
Go to Settings > General > Keyboards > Hardware Keyboard > set the keyboard backlight slider to a brighter position.
Reboot iPad Pro/Air with Magic Keyboard.
Turn off your iPad Air or iPad Pro, and then turn it back on.
To do this, press and hold the power button and volume button until the “Slide to turn off” screen appears, then slide to turn off your iPad.
After a moment, hold down the Power button to turn your iPad back on.
This simple yet common troubleshooting method often fixes all sorts of quirks and issues, including a Magic Keyboard not backlit properly.
You can also force restart your iPad Pro or iPad Air if you want, instead by pressing Volume Up, Volume Down, and then pressing and holding the Power button until the Apple logo appears on the iPad screen.
Take the magic keyboard to a dark room
The iPad Magic Keyboard turns on and adjusts automatically based on the ambient light in the room as detected by iPad. Therefore, if you are outdoors in bright sunlight or in a brightly lit room, the backlight of the Magic Keyboard will not turn on.
If the iPad Magic Keyboard is used in a bright room, the keyboard backlight will not work or be visible at all if it is on. Enter a darkened or dark room (such as a room with no lights or a closet) and start using the iPad Magic Keyboard.
This often results in the iPad Magic Keyboard turning on when it was otherwise turned off.
In a dim/dark room, manually adjust the brightness of the Magic Keyboard
In a dim or dark room, try manually adjusting the brightness of your keyboard backlight by going to Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboards > and setting the Keyboard Lighting slider to the brightest position.
Make sure the case/sticker/etc. does not block the light sensor
The ambient light sensor is located next to the front camera on iPad Pro and iPad Air. Make sure nothing is blocking this, be it a case, a sticker, dirt, or something else, as a blocked ambient light sensor will prevent the iPad from turning on the backlight of the Magic Keyboard.
iPad Magic Keyboard Backlight Still not working? Contact Apple
If you’ve followed all of the steps above and your iPad Magic Keyboard still won’t activate backlit keys, you might have a device malfunction or some other hardware problem. It’s rare, but it happens. The best thing to do in this situation is to simply contact Apple or visit an Apple Store and get support. If it’s a faulty device, they’ll replace it for you, provided the device is under warranty anyway (or the person you’re dealing with feels generous).
